Gotham Girls Roller Derby

(Photo: Sean Hale)

Gotham Girls Roller Derby is NYC’s only all-female, do-it-yourself roller derby league. The league is comprised of teams of strong, diverse, and independent women who compete locally and internationally, while Gotham Girls Junior Derby encourages girls under 18 to follow their lead. As a 501c3 non-profit organization, GGRD is committed to promoting the physical and mental strength and independent spirit of amateur female athletes.

(Never seen roller derby? Here are some basics.)

For girls under 18 and women (and men) new to roller derby, GGRD has several recurring classes and teams. Tryouts are also held once a year for GGRD’s (adult) home teams, which battle each other in NYC during the spring and summer.

Our daughter absolutely loves GGJD. Often a homebody, Roller Derby is one of the few things I don’t have to drag her out the door for. She’s always eager to go. The coaches really work to challenge the skaters to get to their next level with encouragement and patience.

We love GG Junior Derby! The girls have a ton of fun, learn a team sport and get the discipline of regular practice, scrimmages and bouts. When KP started she had never been on roller skates (just blades) and after just a couple of months became proficient in all the basic moves. And she loves her derby friends – they are all nice kids who are there to have fun and skate. Go GGJD!

My daughter is about to age out of the junior team, so this is a good moment to write a review. Our family has been with Gotham juniors for five years, from when my daughter was 12 to now at 17. Any parent of a teenager knows these are the most crucial years for a young girl growing into a woman. I don’t know how I could have gotten through it with out this team. It’s been everything for my girl’s confidence and self esteem, her ability to work with others and her ability to handle hard work and even disappointment, but mostly, through being a Gotham Junior she feels personally successful. The challenge for our young women is how to be themselves on their own terms. My girl was NOT the team sport type. She never felt she good enough in school sports: basketball, hockey, volleyball and competition was terrible for her confidence. But when she found roller derby she loved it and became very determined. When she began she couldn’t even skate and now she is on the travel team. It’s been an incredibly exciting journey, not only to watch her grow, become skilled and play, but to watch her grow into a graceful and confident athlete. Words will never come close to how grateful I am to the talented coaches, top ranked players in their own right, who put so much of themselves into teaching the girls. I consider our family so lucky. Thank you Gotham Juniors!
